Discover: Flick of the Whisk Cakes
Tell us about yourself! What’s your background and what do you do?
Hi! Born in Denver but raised in Dayton, OH, I moved to Denver in 2013 after graduating college. Such a great decision because I feel like I really grew into myself after moving here and discovered my passions. I juggle a pretty busy schedule, working as an interior designer, dog walker and running my baking business. It gets crazy!
How did you learn your craft? Tell us about your first finished product.
Baking wasn't something I was always interested in or good at. The only thing I ever baked before starting my business was chocolate chip cookies and cake box brownies. So all I've learned since starting my business has been self-taught by watching tons of videos, trial & error, and following some of the best cake artists on social media. The first cake I ever made that I actually put some effort into was a caramel apple naked cake for Thanksgiving 2018. My family thought it was AMAZING and I thought to myself "hm, maybe I'm not too bad at this!"
Where does the name of your business come from?
I was in the car with a friend & we were brainstorming names & somehow "Flick of the Whisk" popped into my mind. And we started singing the song "Flicka da Wrist.” I always appreciate people who come by my table at markets and say " OMG I get it! Such an awesome name!" I had one guy buy from me because he loved the name of my business so much. Those are the super cool people haha.
How long does it take to make your product and what’s involved in the process?
It depends on what I'm making. Cakes can range from 3 to 7 hours depending on how detailed it is and the flavor. Tiered cakes take the most time because it involves making and decorating 2-3 cakes and then stacking them on top of each other. I almost have a heart attack every time I have to deliver one haha. I've become super quick at making cupcakes, so I can knock out a dozen cupcakes in an hour. My jar cupcakes take a little longer because I have to cut each one in half and pipe frosting between each layer, so its more of a tedious process.
Where does your inspiration come from?
My inspiration comes from seeing other successful cake artists who have grown their businesses in a matter of years. Sometimes I get discouraged, but then I see bakers who share their progress and it gives me so much motivation to keep going. I look back at cakes I did in the beginning and cakes I've recently done and I feel so proud and accomplished.
What’s your favorite product that you’ve created?
My favorite piece so far was a 22nd anniversary cake. It was a small 6" cake, but the customer told me to be creative and her only requirement was to incorporate blue and white because that was their wedding colors. I used a technique where I use an offset spatula to paint 3 shades of blue buttercream around the cake and added flowers on top. I used to paint in high school so it was like I was tapping into my artist mind. They were so grateful and loved the cake.
What question do you get asked the most at pop-up markets?
"Are they candles?" I get this question at every single market. My cupcakes are in jars, so when people see them, they automatically think they are candles. One lady actually tried to open one up and smell it!
What’s something unique about you that most people don’t know (or wouldn’t guess)?
I went to a boarding school called Culver Academies for high school. It was the best experience ever and I sometimes wish I could go back.
What’s your favorite beverage to sip on?
Mimosas! (If we're talking alcohol)
What’s up next for Flick of the Whisk Cakes?
I have so many ideas for my business it gets overwhelming! I would eventually like to get to a point where I am mainly a cupcake shop and shipping my cupcake jars worldwide. I would like to have them in coffee shops, grocery stores, etc. and be a go-to for weddings and large events.
